Information Systems/Technology and Patient Care Technology for the Improvement and Trasformation of Healthcare
The American Academy of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) requires that advanced practice nurses graduating from DNP programs be knowledgeable in the use of information technology and systems (2006). This is especially pertinent in today's healthcare environment, where most organizations are documenting patient care electronically. Accompanying this phenomenon is a variety of factors for proficiency- best practices for information systems, how they are used to inform quality improvement and patient care, ethical considerations, current and changing regulatory issues, and legality (AACN, 2006). Not only does the DNP nurse need to understand how such systems are used in clinical settings, but how these systems impact their clients' care and their understanding and access of information related to their care.

To demonstrate my understanding and competency in these areas, I've included two assignments from NURS6286. The first, an E-health Evaluation Checklist, demonstrates a checklist I developed to evaluate a patient mobile application for suitability for use by hypothetical patients. The second is a clinical EHR workflow developed to understand and streamline the STI testing and documentation process, which was a real world issue I was encountering with several of my clinics. Each of these demonstrates different areas of competency under this DNP essential.
